IoT Weather Station & Automated Greenhouse

The Grades 7-8 curriculum combines environmental measurements with a connected dashboard and watering decisions. This planned build helps students see that automation depends on the quality of the measurements, not just the code that switches a pump.

Measurements before automation

Temperature, humidity and soil-moisture readings describe different conditions. Students observe how each changes and decide what a reading can reasonably tell them. A soil sensor does not directly know whether a plant is healthy. A useful project states what is measured, what is inferred and what remains unknown.

Grade and components

The existing Grades 7-8 pathway, approximately ages 12-13, lists an ESP32 Wi-Fi/BLE board, OLED display, soil-moisture and DHT11 sensors, and relay modules. The greenhouse example adds a supervised watering-pump demonstration. Use a mentor-approved low-voltage setup; students should not wire mains electricity or put exposed electrical connections near water.

Software and engineering decisions

The pathway introduces Python data scripts, MQTT or WebSockets, and ESP-IDF or Arduino tools. Students can display a measurement locally before transmitting it to a dashboard. Timestamped readings and sensible sampling intervals make a trend easier to interpret than an isolated number.

A control rule needs more than an on/off threshold. What should happen when the sensor disconnects, Wi-Fi stops, or the reading hovers near the threshold? Students can define a safe stop state and separate sensor collection from watering decisions. These are approachable examples of state machines and system architecture.

Learning outcome

The learner should explain the path from physical measurement to display and action, identify unreliable data, and describe a safe failure response. Parents can ask to see a chart and the rule that uses it. This is a curriculum guide; real project photographs and videos will be published only when available.
